Privacy Statement
Your Privacy Rights
Your personal information is protected by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act). CSIRO will handle your information in accordance with this Act, the National Health & Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated 2018) and CSIRO's Privacy Policy.
What We Collect
Your personal information is being collected by CSIRO and UQ for the purposes of conducting the STEPS project, facilitating your access and use of the app, and related scientific research. CSIRO may collect personal information from users of the app. The personal information collected may vary for different individuals, and may include your name, email address, login details, step count and information relating to your use of the app such as Internet Protocol (IP) address and log/usage data.
CSIRO may also collect your sensitive information, including your health information, for the purposes outlined above.
User and study data will be stored in accordance with data management and retention guidelines published by the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Queensland Government. As such, all records will be retained for seven years following publication. At the end of the retention period, all data will be securely disposed of in according to the Health Sector Retention and Disposal Schedule (2023)
Hosting & Infrastructure
The app is hosted by CSIRO on Google Cloud Platform servers based in Australia.
Disclosure of Information
CSIRO may disclose your information to third parties including Google, Apple and CSIRO's research partners, The University of Queensland for the purposes outlined above.
With your consent, CSIRO and its research partners may also disclose your information to your treating doctors in the event of any findings that may be of concern to your health. Please do not provide information about any other individual via the Steps app without their consent.
Third-Party Apps
Your use of Apple or Google's applications to download the app is covered by your personal agreement to their respective Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policies only. For more information, please refer to:
Research Outcomes
Results from the project will be de-identified and/or aggregated by CSIRO and its research partners and published in publicly available scientific journals and presented during conference presentations.
